RANSUM STATE OF MIND

Ten minutes ago, I just went and picked up 8oz of dat mudd. I also picked up a copy of Fat Pat's - Ghetto Dreams.
I'm listening to it as I write because I had to "get my mind right" before I started this.

Track 12 TOPS DROP.........I start to smile.
It brings me back to a time when, although we all wanted Houston to blow up like it is now, all we cared about
was making sure we respected OUR music. Mayne I miss the old Houston............

You know you're from Houston if:
-on the drug tip LMAO buying 2 for $5 or 3 for $10 niggas rollin the sweets extra big (wasn't smoking then)

-Stores selling Single Newports (some still do)

-Ohhh @ starching the pants LOL

-wearing HILFIGER, POLO and NAUTICA

-EVERY hood had had that COOL dopefiend that used to shoot the shit and be talking shit, and didn't hide the fact
that he smoke LOL

-HOOD SHIT: late at night dopefiends walking around like its daylight or riding on bikes lolll

-Dopefiend nigga can fix ANYTHING!

-going to the BOOTLEG on Sundays (Acres Home)

-seeing the HOOKERS walk: especially on Waco in 5th Ward (shout out to the nickel!! used to chill on Dan & Hersche....
with the identical row houses and shit; niggas selling dope out of em)

-Going to the HOURLY rooms (Tweety's and if you nasty; THE BARRON on W. Montgomery!)

-when gas didn't cost much and rode on the South and the North

-Going to MACGREGOR PARK

-On MLK on Sundays

-Going to Lincoln City Park in the 44

-You remember Lil Flip used to go hard when he was wit Sucka Free...

-You remember when Original 84'z & 83'z was tha shit (before there was TWW)

-You know the beat to the June 27th freestyle.

-You remember when you first heard screw music.

-You can remember every word to the songs, "Bar Baby" and "Maaann."

-You remember " I got 25 lighters on my dresser ... "

-You never get tired of singing the hook to "Wanna be a Balla."

-You can sing a screwed song off the dome and remember when the chops come in, lol

-You know what comes after "draped up dripped out." (You knew this before Bun B's song).

-You can understand Yungstar when he is rapping.

-You think of classics in terms of music from Fat Pat, UGK, Big Moe, and Scarface.

You see, as fast as a few of our homeboys are reaching super-stardom (because they were our homeboys before any
MTV appearance or video on MTV), we're losing the very substance from which our spotlight came.

I ask myself, what happened to us? Where's OUR music at?

Remember when you could go to the Kappa Beach Party in Galveston and just dap-up Paul Wall and Slim Thug? Remember when they had
no body guards...no guest appearances from Pharrell or Lil Wayne...and they were getting dissed by the same stuck-up girl
that just dissed you and your homies?

Remember when you could give a CD to a DJ at 979, and he'd play it just because it jammed? Now, the only way you can get a
song played is if you have a deal, or you have thousands of dollars (see "payola" aka illegal).
With giant radio conglomerates taking over, and successful Houston rappers not helping spotlight the up-and-coming music
scene, we're losing it.

I remember groups like Beltway 8. No major deal, but you knew who they were and you knew a few of their songs. Same way
that the S.U.C. and Swisha House started out. But who can you name now that's getting radio play and you know their songs,
like we did with the other groups just a few years ago?

Ever since Southwest Wholesale went out of business, independent (aka TRUE) Houston music has been on the decline.
There was a time when all one had to do was get some money, press up CDs and get them in stores in "Tha H," but now,
it's nearly impossible.

I'm longing for the days of yesterday when the clubs ONLY played Houston music, and artists like Jay-Z, Young Jeezy,
and 50 Cent were only played when you needed to get a rest or when the club wasn't poppin'. I'm longing for the days
when the DJ at T-town or Max's (or Chocolate Town or Jamaica Jamaica for y'all older cats) would play DJ DMD's
"25 Lighters," then Keke's "Pimp tha Pen," followed by "3 in da Mornin'," Fat Pat's "Don't Knock My Hustle," "Superstar,"
"Tops Drop," and last but not least, he'd play "June 27th," and when Youngstar's verse would come in, drop the beat, and
the whole club would rap his verse line for line.
